Spanish-American War: Dunklin County residents answer the call to serve

The Spanish-American War was fought between the United States and Spain from April 21 – Aug. 13, 1898, following the explosion of the USS Maine in the harbor at Havana, Cuba. The United States’ victory over Spain marked an end to the Spanish Empire, and allowed temporary control by the United States of Cuba, as well as ceded our country the ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine island.

As the nation mobilized for war in 1898, residents of Dunklin County answered the call to serve. Following is an article from page 1 of the June 17, 1898 issue of the Daily Dunklin Democrat that includes the names of the members of Company Volunteer Infantry of Dunklin County.

W. S. Vandiver and other friends interested, to assist in the good work, hired the band and, with flags and banners went to Senath and Holcomb, Monday, to get up an interest. The St. L., K. & S. railroad management kindly carried the enthusiasts to both Places free of charge.
