Dunklin County Genealogical Society Meeting

Just getting around to posting about the Dunklin County Genealogical Society Meeting. We are waiting for Family Search to approve our request to become an auxiliary. If approved, we would be able to research more records including records that formally could only be searched by visiting a Family Search Center or going to Salt Lake City. When we receive the approval, anyone could visit our genealogy room to access these records. Also, during the meeting the members approved making membership dues to become due in January of each year. This will make it easier and less time consuming for the person responsible for keeping membership account up-to-date. This was necessary because we have so few active members who are able to assist with the administrative work necessary to keep the genealogical society going. After the business was taken care of, we discussed several ways of how do save money while doing your family research. We looked at myths about our immigrant ancestors. We hear a lot today about how our ancestors came here legally and assimilated. However for most of us, our ancestors came before immigration had any restrictions. There were no background checks, visa, iteracy requirement etc. until the U. S. entered WWI. Immigrants usually settle in communities with their fellow countrymen. These communities usually had organizations or society to help immigrants. Although there were no “handouts” as we think of today, there were charitable organizations available for assistance.
